Crime Numbers

The FBI publishes crime data from local law enforcement agencies in Indiana participating in its Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) program. While incomplete, its crime figures for Johnson County are representative of the crime trend in the county. The FBI’s data show that Johnson County recorded 435 violent crimes and 2,878 property crimes in 2017. Compared to the 2013 crime statistics provided by the agency, both violent crime rate and the property crime rate increased by 58.2% and 0.98% respectively.

A breakdown of reported violent crimes for 2017 shows that the county recorded 1 murder, 8 rapes, 29 robberies, and 397 aggravated assaults. Property crimes reported for the same period include 236 burglaries, 2,429 larcenies, and 163 motor vehicle thefts. The most recent five-year crime trend for the county reveals that the only crime rate that fell between 2013 and 2107 was larceny (3.4%). On the other hand, murder and burglary crime rates remained unchanged in the same period while rape (166.7%), robbery (52.6%), aggravated assaults (57.5%), and motor vehicle theft (63%) rates increased.

Criminal Records

The Indiana State Police (ISP) provides the criminal history records for all counties in the state. Johnson County residents can obtain either limited or full criminal history reports. A limited criminal history report is a name-based search that only provides records of felonies and misdemeanor arrests while the full report comes from a fingerprint-based check and contains all reported arrests, charges, and dispositions.

The ISP provides an online portal for obtaining limited criminal history reports. Each search conducted using this portal costs $15 payable by credit card plus a $1.32 payment processing fee. Alternatively, submit a mail request for a criminal history record by completing this form and sending it to:

Indiana State Police
Criminal History Limited Check
P.O. Box 6188
Indianapolis, IN 46206-6188
(317) 232-8262

Enclose a money order for the fee and a copy of a valid ID. Where a full criminal history report is required, schedule an appointment online or by calling (877) 472-6917 for fingerprinting with IdentoGo service in the county. The requester may choose to pay with a credit card at the time of scheduling this appointment or come with a cashier’s check or money order to the fingerprinting service center. The fingerprinting service provider may charge an additional fee for this service.
