What are Vanderburgh County Public Records?

The Indiana Access to Public Records Act describes Vanderburgh County public records as records generated, maintained, or received by any public agency. Information on these records is public and should be available to requesters regardless of physical form or characteristics. Vanderburgh County crime statistics are published online by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) through its Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program. In 2019, the UCR reported 1,067 Vanderburgh County offenses, including 51 violent crimes, 482 property crimes, and 1 arson. The report also shows 1 murder and nonnegligent manslaughter, 9 rape incidents, 4 robberies, and 37 aggravated assaults. Property crime figures were 61 burglaries, 399 larceny thefts, and 22 motor vehicle thefts. In 2018, the publication revealed a total of 1,317, representing a 19% reduction in crime activity.

How Do I Visit an Inmate in the Vanderburgh County Jail?

Prospective visitors must first register online or visit the kiosk at the jail lobby. The Vanderburgh County Jail allows local and video visits booked according to the following schedule:

An inmate may receive a maximum of two approved visitors at a time, with each visitor restricted to one inmate per day. Persons younger than 18 should be members of the inmate's immediate family, including a child, stepchild, grandchild, or sibling. The person should also be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian named on the visitation list. Furthermore, no more than two children may visit an inmate.

Visitors should always dress appropriately and keep contraband items away. Unauthorized items include phones, food, drinks, tobacco products, electronic devices, or flammable products. Anyone who flouts the jail’s rules may lose their visitation privileges.

Court Records

Vanderburgh County has a Circuit Court with original jurisdiction over all criminal and civil cases. The court also hears most domestic relations cases, juvenile matters, and all other cases beyond the Superior Court’s jurisdiction. The Vanderburgh County Health Department processes requests for death records. Vanderburgh County death certificates are not public records and are only accessible to requesters with a direct interest in the records. Are Property Records Open to the Public in Vanderburgh County?

Vanderburgh County property records are considered public according to the Indiana Access to Public Records Act.
